Seoul Metro and Bus Scams: Navigating the Korean Capital Safely

Seoul boasts one of the most advanced public transit systems in the world. The Seoul Metro, Korail lines, and extensive bus network are fast, clean, and affordable. However, like any major metropolis, Seoul metro scams and tourist-targeted fraud do occur, particularly around high-traffic hubs like Gangnam, Hongdae, and Myeongdong.

T-Money and Transit Card Fraud

The T-money card is essential for getting around Seoul. Scammers exploit its convenience through cloning, fake reloading, and social engineering.

Skimming at Convenience Stores & Kiosks

T-money cards can be reloaded at CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, and subway kiosks. Counterfeit card readers placed near official terminals can skim card data. Always reload at the main cashier counter or official subway vending machines. If a kiosk looks tampered with or is located in an obscure corner, avoid it.

Fake T-Money Sellers at Markets

Near Namdaemun and Dongdaemun markets, street vendors may sell "pre-loaded" T-money cards at a premium or claim to sell discounted transit passes. These cards are often depleted, cloned, or completely non-functional. Purchase T-money cards only from official convenience stores, subway stations, or GS25/CU outlets.

Distraction Theft in Crowded Hubs

Stations like Seoul Station, Express Bus Terminal, and Hongik University see millions of commuters daily. Pickpockets target tourists carrying large luggage or distracted by navigation apps.

Taxi & Ride-Hailing Scams

While most Korean taxis are safe and metered, tourists are occasionally targeted by unlicensed drivers or dishonest meter operators.

Fake Kakao T Drivers

Scammers may approach tourists at hotels or nightlife districts claiming to be their booked Kakao T driver. Always verify the license plate and driver photo in the app before entering any vehicle. Never accept rides from individuals approaching you off the app.

Airport Flat Rate Overcharging

Unlicensed drivers at Incheon Airport (ICN) may offer flat rates to downtown Seoul that are 30–50% higher than official taxi fares. Always use the official taxi stands located outside the arrivals hall. Licensed taxis use the meter or official flat-rate zones clearly posted at the stand.
